TVHBO's 'Harry Potter' Season 2 Adds Three Major Cast Members

HBO’s ‘Harry Potter’ Season 2 Adds Three Major Cast Members

HBO has tapped Billy Barratt to play young Tom Riddle, Lenny Rush to voice Dobby and Bonnie Hill to take on the role of Ginny Weasley in Season 2 of its upcoming ‘Harry Potter’ television series.

The casting announcements arrive as the network continues work on its highly anticipated adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s beloved book series. The upcoming season will tackle ‘Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets’, introducing several key characters from the second book to the new adaptation.

Barratt, who has appeared in ‘Invasion’ and other television projects, will portray the younger version of one of the franchise’s most infamous villains. Tom Riddle plays a pivotal role in ‘Chamber of Secrets’, with Harry discovering his connection to Lord Voldemort through an enchanted diary that slowly reveals the dark wizard’s past.

The television format gives HBO’s adaptation a chance to explore Riddle’s backstory with far more depth than the original films allowed.

Known for his work in ‘Doctor Who’ and ‘Enola Holmes 2’, Rush will voice the beloved house elf who becomes one of Harry’s most loyal allies. Toby Jones originally brought Dobby to life in the film series, but the HBO adaptation will introduce the character to a new generation while giving him considerably more screen time.

In ‘Chamber of Secrets’, Dobby’s cryptic warnings about the dangers facing Harry create as many questions as answers, making him a crucial player in the story.

Hill has been cast as Ginny Weasley for the second season, taking over from Gracie Cochrane, who exited the production. While Ginny’s role remains relatively small early in the series, her significance to the larger ‘Harry Potter’ narrative grows substantially as the books progress.

The three new castings join an already solid ensemble anchored by Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley and Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger. The supporting cast includes John Lithgow as Dumbledore, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid.

The first season, based on ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’, is scheduled to premiere on December 25, 2026. The series will dedicate one full season to each book, giving creators significantly more room to develop characters and storylines than the original film adaptations.

HBO’s adaptation represents a complete reimagining of Rowling’s novels rather than a continuation of the films. Francesca Gardiner serves as showrunner, while director Mark Mylod is among the executive producers attached to the project.

With Season 2 already moving forward, the casting of Tom Riddle, Dobby and Ginny signals that HBO is pushing toward the darker, more complex elements of the wizarding world. Longtime fans will inevitably compare the new performances with Christian Coulson’s Tom Riddle, Toby Jones’ Dobby and Bonnie Wright’s Ginny from the original films. But the extended television format offers a real opportunity to spend meaningful time with these characters and explore the book material that received short shrift on screen.
