Europe’s Animation Industry Gets Its First Green Standard

Europe’s animation industry is taking sustainability more seriously with ANiMPACT, a new environmental certification program from CineRegio, Ecoprod, and Green Film that gives studios a standardized route to greener production and funding-linked credibility.

The program fills a long-standing gap in the industry. While live-action productions have had established green standards for years, animation studios have lacked a common benchmark despite growing pressure to reduce their environmental impact.

Built with input from industry and sustainability experts, ANiMPACT is designed to work across different studio sizes and production formats. One of its main goals is to help funders and regional film bodies assess sustainability claims more consistently while filtering out vague or unsupported green claims.

The certification framework covers key areas of production, including governance, digital workflows, energy use, transport, catering, merchandising, and communications. ANiMPACT is now in its pilot phase, allowing European productions to test the system before a wider rollout.

The move marks an important shift for Europe’s animation industry, signaling that environmental responsibility is becoming a formal expectation rather than an optional extra.
