The French actress has earned widespread acclaim for her gut-wrenching role in Marie Kreutzer’s latest film. The film premiered at the 79th Cannes Film Festival this month.

A Harrowing Family Drama

“Gentle Monster” tells the story of Lucy Weiss, a renowned pianist who moves to the countryside with her husband Philip and their young son to help Philip recover from burnout. Soon, the family’s fresh start unravels when Lucy discovers that her husband is involved in child pornography. Consequently, she is forced to grapple with devastating questions about love, trust, and betrayal.

The film also follows Elsa Kühn, a police detective played by Jella Haase. Elsa confronts her own father’s disturbing past. Both women, the narrative suggests, have built their lives around men whose darker sides they’ve refused to acknowledge.

Critical Praise and Standing Ovations

Seydoux’s performance earned a six-minute standing ovation when the film premiered at Cannes. This response has positioned her as a strong contender for major awards. Critics have called her turn “committed” and “gut-wrenching.” They also praised director Kreutzer’s “sensitive” and “sophisticated” approach to difficult subject matter.

The film, a co-production between Austria, Germany, and France, has been described as bleak and disquieting. It gives an unflinching examination of how family foundations can crumble when trust is shattered.

The Cast and Crew

Alongside Seydoux and Haase, the film features Laurence Rupp as Philip. There is also a brief appearance by Catherine Deneuve as Lucy’s mother. Kreutzer, known for her previous work on “Corsage,” wrote and directed the 114-minute German-language drama. This marks her first collaboration with Seydoux.

The film is competing for the Palme d’Or and has already sparked conversations about Seydoux’s potential Oscar nomination prospects.
