HERE TODAY – Movie Review

By Arun Sajnani

HERE TODAY – I know its been a while for a film review by me, but I came across a simple film, that would not be considered amazing cinema, but I would rather say more of a touching film.

“HERE TODAY”, which released this past Friday in theaters has been directed by Billy Crystal, and stars himself and Tiffany Haddish. The film is an introspect that tells the story of a comedic writer named, Charlie Burns that works for a “Saturday Night Live” kind of show on TV. He is in his late 60’s. He is a widow and has been battling dementia. It is a disease that slowly takes your memories away.

He has regrets, on loosing his dear wife years ago and wants make things right with his family.

Life is short, and misunderstandings do arise in one’s life. We all have things to resolve. Life is too short, but when Emma comes into his life, played by Tiffany Haddish, the sparks fly and the companionship of friendship blooms. Her foul mouth funny character connects the dots for him to seek peace with his son and daughter.  It can be love…a spooning kind of love without the sex between Charlie and Emma. But to be there for someone in life, which is fading away is endearing.

Both Tiffany Haddish and Crystal are way opposites, but it does work.  Haddish finally has a sensitive material to perform from, and that is good for a change. It does loosely remind you of the play – “Death of A Salesman”, but with Crystal putting humor, with his Jewish heritage and infusing his other semi-autobiographical work, it becomes something fresh and new as a story. The film may not be for all, but it did touch me on a personal level.
