‘Idiots’: Macon Blair’s 13-Year Journey From Setbacks to the Big Screen

Macon Blair’s Idiots has finally hit theaters, but getting the comedy to the screen was anything but easy. The film, starring Dave Franco, O’Shea Jackson Jr. and Mason Thames, is the product of more than a decade of development hell, recasting drama, production headaches and even a complete title overhaul.

The project began in 2013, when Blair was still making a name for himself in Hollywood. What followed were years of multiple rewrites, casting changes and false starts before the movie eventually took shape. All told, the journey from concept to release stretched across 13 years.

Blair, known for indie darlings like I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore and The Toxic Avenger, originally conceived the project under a very different name: The Shitheads.

The film went through major transformations along the way. Earlier iterations featured different actors who eventually departed, forcing Blair to rebuild the cast around Franco, Jackson and other performers. Through it all, the constantly shifting production could have easily fallen apart. Instead, Blair kept pushing forward.

The final version centers on Mark and Davis, a pair of down-on-their-luck guys hired to transport a troubled teenager to a rehabilitation facility. Franco takes on the role of Mark, while Jackson plays Davis. Mason Thames is Sheridan, the wealthy kid whose trip to rehab quickly spirals into chaos.

The ensemble cast also features Kiernan Shipka, Peter Dinklage and Nicholas Braun a mix of established names and rising talent that gives the road comedy its edge.

Perhaps the most obvious sign of the film’s evolution came with its title change. After debuting at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival as The Shitheads, the movie was rebranded as Idiots. Independent Film Company picked up U.S. distribution rights, ultimately releasing the film theatrically on August 28.

At its core, Idiots follows two broke guys forced to work together on what should be a simple job. Their straightforward assignment quickly devolves into an unpredictable, dangerous road trip. The film leans into the raunchy, irreverent tone of classic road comedies while zeroing in on the strange bond that forms between its three leads.

On set, Franco and Thames reportedly developed genuine chemistry they’d actually worked together before on Regretting You.

After years of uncertainty, rewrites and casting shake-ups, Blair’s Idiots is now playing in multiplexes across the country. What might otherwise be just another comedy release carries extra weight as the payoff to a 13-year slog through Hollywood’s machinery.

For Blair, it’s proof that persistence can pay off even when the odds seem stacked against you.
