JOKER …I always thought my life was a tragedy, but actually it is a comedy…” says Arthur Fleck – (AKA- JOKER). Director Todd Phipps takes a look at this DC Comic character with a mature and more dark angle. Now the trend is to see how the bad guy got be the bad guy.
The film is disturbing at times to watch, yet Joaquin Phoenix is amazing as the “JOKER”. He just gets into the mindset, and the psyche of this guy who has come up from an abusive child hood. He is a broken man who hides behind a mask. He is a clown that smiles while suffering. He is a guy who needs a lot of medication to be normal. He just needed a little love.
The film is set in the late 70’s, in Gotham City. Law and order is falling apart. Jobs a are scarce. The rich are getting richer. These topics are relevant to us even today in real life. Using a gun to solve a problem. racism and bully-ism are prevalent even in today’s current events, which I personally felt that these topics are relevant and may stir the pot with the today’s audience. So do go with precaution to see this film.
It is a sheer performance film with Robert De Niro as well, playing a “Merv Griffin” type talk show host. Note: Do not be surprised with big billboard signs at the theater that say…”No Masks, or painted faces allowed in the Theater..” The film gets a 3 star recommendation. Take a look.
