Nancy Guthrie Ransom Notes Released: Investigators Seek Public Help in Arizona Kidnapping Case

Investigators have released the full ransom notes tied to the disappearance of 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie, mother of NBC “Today” co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, as they seek fresh leads six months into the high-profile kidnapping investigation.

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department made the letters public as detectives continue pursuing new evidence in one of Arizona’s most closely watched missing-person cases. Sheriff Chris Nanos said investigators believe the notes’ wording, writing style and distinctive language could help someone identify the author.

Investigators say the first ransom note arrived shortly after Nancy Guthrie disappeared from her Tucson-area home. The writer demanded $4 million in Bitcoin and threatened to raise the demand to $6 million if the family failed to pay within three days.

Detectives also found details about Guthrie’s home in the letter that suggested the writer had direct knowledge of the crime scene.

Days later, investigators received a second note claiming Nancy Guthrie died soon after the abduction because of an undisclosed heart condition. The writer expressed remorse and claimed to have buried her “in nature.” Authorities, however, have not verified those claims and continue to investigate the case as an active kidnapping.

Nanos said investigators released the letters to generate new tips from the public.

He said detectives believe the notes contain distinctive linguistic patterns that someone familiar with the author’s writing or speech may recognize. Investigators pointed to previous criminal cases in which unique writing styles helped identify suspects.

Authorities are urging anyone who recognizes specific phrases, grammar or other characteristics in the letters to contact investigators.

Nancy Guthrie disappeared from her home on Feb. 1 after investigators found evidence indicating she had likely been abducted. Surveillance cameras later captured a masked individual near the property, and forensic investigators recovered blood matching Guthrie’s DNA.

Despite months of forensic testing, surveillance analysis and assistance from the FBI, investigators have not made any arrests, and Guthrie’s whereabouts remain unknown. Detectives continue examining DNA evidence and other physical evidence collected throughout the investigation.

Savannah Guthrie has repeatedly appealed for information, urging anyone involved to reveal her mother’s location regardless of what happened.

The Guthrie family and the FBI continue to offer a substantial reward for information that helps locate Nancy Guthrie or leads investigators to those responsible.

By releasing the ransom notes, investigators hope someone will recognize the author’s language, identify a suspect or provide information that advances the case.

Authorities say even the smallest detail could prove critical as the investigation enters its seventh month. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Pima County Sheriff’s Department or the FBI.
