Netflix Cancels ‘Sweet Magnolias’ After Five Seasons

Netflix has pulled the plug on Sweet Magnolias after five seasons, ending the romantic drama that followed three lifelong friends navigating life in the fictional Southern town of Serenity. The streaming giant made the decision roughly three months after the fifth season dropped in June 2026.

Based on Sherryl Woods’ bestselling novels, Sweet Magnolias premiered on Netflix in 2020 and became a fan favorite. The series centered on Maddie Townsend, Dana Sue Sullivan and Helen Decatur as they balanced friendship, family, careers and relationships. JoAnna Garcia Swisher, Brooke Elliott and Heather Headley anchored the show as the central trio.

Season 5, which debuted in June, wrapped up the series’ storylines with several major developments. Maddie returned home after a career setback in New York, while Dana Sue and Helen faced significant changes in their own lives. The finale also brought Helen’s marriage to Erik to the screen.

The cancellation comes after viewership declined during the show’s final two seasons. According to reports, Season 5 managed just three weeks in Netflix’s global Top 10 for English-language series and four weeks on Nielsen’s U.S. streaming charts.

All five seasons remain available to stream on Netflix for fans wanting to revisit Serenity.

The creative team won’t be idle for long. Netflix has greenlit Ladies of the House, a new drama series featuring Garcia Swisher alongside creator and showrunner Sheryl J. Anderson. Based on Lauren Edmondson’s novel, the project centers on a widow and her two adult daughters as they manage family drama and rebuild their family winery business.

Garcia Swisher will also executive produce the new series through her company, Rolling Clover, giving the pair another opportunity to collaborate on a female-led Netflix drama.
