The Apologist Explores the Power of Forgiveness

Belgian filmmaker Kristof Bilsen is premiering his latest documentary, The Apologist, at this year’s Sheffield DocFest, taking a hard look at how apologies can reshape collective memory and help societies heal from historical injustices and colonial legacies.

The film, which competes in the festival’s International Competition section, traces interconnected stories across the globe, following individuals and communities as they confront the fallout from past wrongdoings and navigate the thorny path toward reconciliation.

Rather than focusing on grand public statements or political theatre, Bilsen digs deeper into what comes after an apology is made. Through theater productions, rituals, public commissions, and acts of remembrance, the documentary explores the emotional and cultural toll of seeking forgiveness and attempting to repair societies fractured by conflict and oppression.

One storyline follows a Belgian actor and Belgian-Congolese collaborator as they grapple with Belgium’s colonial past in Congo, while another documents communities in El Salvador honoring victims of past atrocities through collective remembrance ceremonies. Together, these narratives examine how societies preserve memory and confront difficult truths.

Bilsen, known for documentaries exploring identity and social change, brings both intimacy and political clarity to the subject. His film raises uncomfortable questions about responsibility, justice, and whether genuine reconciliation is even possible without fully reckoning with historical harm.

Arriving as part of Sheffield DocFest’s 2026 program—themed “Realities in Motion”— The Apologist comes at a moment when conversations about historical accountability and collective healing continue to dominate public discourse worldwide.
