Tom Hanks Baseball Drama ‘The Comebacker’ Coming to Theaters Summer 2027

Sony Pictures has officially set a release date for The Comebacker, the baseball drama starring Tom Hanks. The film will premiere on July 30, 2027, reuniting the Oscar-winning actor with director Marielle Heller, who helmed the acclaimed 2019 drama ‘A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood’.

The announcement marks the first major update since Sony won a competitive bidding war for the project earlier this year.

The Comebacker marks the second collaboration between Hanks and Heller, who earned widespread praise for their work on ‘A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood’—a film that netted Hanks a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination.

The film is adapted from a short story by acclaimed author Dave Eggers and will be produced by both Hanks and Heller through their respective production companies.

The sports drama follows Lionel, an aging baseball journalist whose waning passion for the game gets a second wind after a minor league pitcher is called up to the majors. When the pitcher suffers a head injury from a line drive—commonly called a “comebacker”—he begins exhibiting bizarre behavior, including speaking in poetry. His mysterious transformation captures public attention and reignites Lionel’s love for storytelling and baseball.

While Eggers’ original story centered on the San Francisco Giants, the film adaptation will instead focus on the New York Mets.

Hanks will be joined by an impressive supporting cast including Bad Bunny, Colman Domingo, and Callum Turner.

The Comebacker marks Hanks’ first baseball-focused film since 1992’s beloved ‘A League of Their Own’. With strong creative talent behind and in front of the camera, Sony is positioning the project as a major summer 2027 release.
