Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s Journey into Samurai Cinema

After more than four decades making psychological thrillers and horror films, legendary Japanese director Kiyoshi Kurosawa is stepping into unfamiliar territory with his first-ever samurai film. The Samurai and the Prisoner (Kokurojo) is an ambitious historical mystery. It is set during Japan’s chaotic 16th-century Warring States period. Moreover, it’s heading to Cannes next May.

A Mystery Trapped Behind Castle Walls

Based on Honobu Yonezawa’s acclaimed novel, the film follows Lord Araki Murashige (Masahiro Motoki), who defies the brutal warlord Oda Nobunaga. He soon finds himself under siege in his own fortress. But the real threat lurks within, as a series of murders begins unfolding inside the castle walls. Consequently, the siege transforms into a classic locked-room mystery.

To unravel the killings and expose the traitors in his midst, Murashige enlists the help of the shrewd imprisoned warrior Kuroda Kanbei (Masaki Suda). As suspicion and betrayal swirl around them, the two men piece together a shocking truth. Notably, this truth is hidden beneath layers of deception.

Star Power and Festival Buzz

The ensemble cast includes Yuriko Yoshitaka, Munetaka Aoki, and Ryota Miyadate alongside Motoki and Suda. The film blends character-driven drama with cerebral whodunnit suspense, which is a natural fit for Kurosawa. His acclaimed films like Cure, Pulse, and Wife of a Spy have earned him a reputation as one of cinema’s most distinctive voices.

The Samurai and the Prisoner will premiere in the Cannes Premiere section at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival on May 19. Afterward, there will be a Japanese theatrical release on June 19 through Shochiku. Additionally, international sales company Charades and U.S. distributor Janus Films have already come on board. This signals strong interest from arthouse audiences worldwide.
