Danish Director May el-Toukhy Takes Venice by Storm With Haunting Postwar Drama

Danish filmmaker May el-Toukhy makes her Venice Film Festival competition debut this year with Woman Unknown, a psychological thriller that explores the secrets and social scars left behind by World War II.

The 124-minute Danish-language film comes from a Denmark-Sweden-Latvia co-production. It competes for the Golden Lion, the top prize at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival.

Rising actress Mathilde Arcel stars as Marie, a young nanny and housemaid who stands on the verge of marrying Christian, a wealthy widower who employs her.

The marriage offers Marie the future she has always wanted. It promises financial security, social respectability and a chance to leave her past behind. However, Marie hides a dangerous secret.

During the German occupation of Denmark in World War II, she had a relationship with a German soldier. When that secret threatens to surface after the war, Marie struggles to protect the new identity she has built. The film also features Carsten Bjørnlund, Thorbjørn Hedegaard and Marina Bouras in supporting roles.

El-Toukhy uses Marie’s personal crisis to explore a much larger historical tragedy. Woman Unknown examines the experiences of women who became involved with soldiers from occupying forces and later faced public humiliation, punishment and lasting social stigma.

The filmmaker also examines how society controls and judges women’s bodies and desires during periods of political upheaval. The story unfolds as Europe attempts to rebuild after the war. While communities embrace hopes of a new beginning, they also confront political instability, rising nationalism and difficult questions surrounding wartime collaboration.

Through Marie’s experience, El-Toukhy connects that history to issues that remain relevant today, including shame, control and society’s judgment of women’s choices.

The Venice competition represents a major career milestone for El-Toukhy. She previously directed Long Story Short and earned international recognition with Queen of Hearts. The latter won the audience award at Sundance and became Denmark’s official submission for the Academy Awards.

El-Toukhy co-wrote Woman Unknown with Maren Louise Käehne. Jasper Spanning handled cinematography, while Rasmus Stensgaard Madsen edited the film.

The production also filmed extensively across the Baltic region. The crew shot 25 of the film’s 28 production days in Riga, Latvia. The film’s selection has also drawn attention to the gender imbalance within this year’s Venice competition.

Woman Unknown is the only film directed by a woman competing for the Golden Lion this year. The limited representation has renewed criticism over the lack of female filmmakers in major international film festival competitions.

That context gives El-Toukhy’s film added significance at Venice. Its story already centers on women’s experiences, social judgment and the struggle for control over one’s identity. Its position as the competition’s sole female-directed feature makes those themes even more striking.

Unknown screens Sept. 6 and 7 as part of the official Venice competition.

With its historical setting, psychological tension and focus on women’s experiences after wartime trauma, the film enters the Golden Lion race as one of the festival’s most closely watched international titles.
