‘The Family Stone’ Sequel Is Really Happening And the Original Cast Is Coming Back

Two decades after warming hearts during the 2005 holiday season, ‘The Family Stone’ is making a comeback. Director Thomas Bezucha has written a sequel that’s bringing the beloved ensemble cast back together for another chapter with the Stone family.

Dermot Mulroney, who originated the role of Everett Stone, recently spilled the details on ‘The Tangle’ podcast, confirming that the project is moving forward with a working title: ‘The Families Stone’. Mulroney revealed he’s already read Bezucha’s new script and said that Rachel McAdams, Luke Wilson, and Craig T. Nelson are among those expected to return.

“Everyone’s up for returning,” Mulroney explained, adding that the script impressed him. Sarah Jessica Parker has also voiced enthusiasm about reuniting with the Stone family, though the sequel carries emotional weight following the death of Diane Keaton, who played matriarch Sybil Stone, last October at age 79.

Bezucha revisited the sequel concept after Keaton’s passing and quickly developed the screenplay, with her absence expected to be woven into the story. The original film centered on family dynamics during Christmas while grappling with Sybil’s illness, making her loss particularly significant to the narrative.

Luke Wilson, who played Ben Stone in the original, has also confirmed his involvement. He told ‘Just Jared’ that he found the script “really funny” and expressed how meaningful a reunion would be following Keaton’s death. Wilson also noted his surprise at how the original film has endured with audiences over the years.

While there’s no release date or production timeline just yet, momentum is clearly building. With the screenplay complete and the core cast on board, ‘The Families Stone’ appears poised to become reality offering fans a chance to reconnect with the beloved family while honoring the legacy of the actress who helped make the original a holiday classic.
