Tiffany Haddish and Devon Sawa Team Up for Mississippi Crime Thriller

Tiffany Haddish is trading comedy for suspense in her latest project, ‘The Girl in the River’, a gritty crime thriller that marks the feature directorial debut of Italian filmmaker Brando Benetton. The film, which has already begun production in Mississippi, brings together an impressive ensemble cast including Devon Sawa, Maggie Grace, and Ralph Macchio.

The story centers on a chilling murder investigation that unfolds in a remote Mississippi town. When twin teenage sisters are abducted, one body surfaces in the Mississippi River while the other vanishes without a trace. Veteran criminologist Alan Kramer, played by Sawa, arrives to help Police Captain Erica Graysmith—Haddish’s character—and ambitious profiler Amelia Pembrock, portrayed by Grace, hunt down a cunning serial killer operating in the shadows.

As the case grows colder and public pressure mounts, the investigators race to prevent another tragedy. The film promises a blend of psychological suspense and emotional depth, centering on a devastating family tragedy at its core.

Haddish has been gradually moving toward more serious dramatic roles in recent years, stepping away from the comedic spotlight that made her famous in films like ‘Girls Trip’. Industry insiders say the actress has been vocal about pursuing more authentic, emotionally compelling characters.

Benetton, who previously directed the short thriller ‘Nightfire’, is bringing the project to life through production companies Andrew Stevens Entertainment and Black Diamond Films. Cameras rolled across several Mississippi locations, including Canton, Jackson, and Vicksburg.
