Tom Pelphrey came closer than most to landing one of comic book’s most coveted roles. The Task star recently revealed he was a runner-up to play Professor Charles Xavier in Marvel Studios’ highly anticipated X-Men reboot.
The actor opened up about the near-miss while discussing his work on HBO’s crime drama Task. Though he didn’t ultimately secure the part, Pelphrey said the audition experience offered valuable perspective on how far his career has progressed.
Pelphrey made it to the final rounds of consideration for the iconic role of Professor X, the telepathic mutant leader of the X-Men a character previously brought to life by Patrick Stewart and James McAvoy.
Pelphrey finished as a top contender alongside Christopher Abbott and others for the highly sought-after position. Bill Skarsgård has also emerged as a leading possibility, though Marvel Studios hasn’t officially announced who will take on the role.
The actor viewed the experience positively, describing it as validation that opportunities continue to open doors in his career.
The audition comes at a pivotal moment for Pelphrey. After earning recognition for roles in Ozark and Banshee, he landed the lead in HBO’s Task, playing Robbie Prendergrast, a struggling single father drawn into a dangerous criminal world. The character resonated with Pelphrey personally he became a father around the time production began.
His performance has earned him another Emmy nomination and solidified his status as one of television’s most compelling dramatic talents.
Interestingly, the X-Men audition wouldn’t have marked Pelphrey’s debut in the Marvel universe. He previously played Ward Meachum in Netflix’s Iron Fist, giving fans an intriguing “what if” about seeing him return to Marvel in such a prestigious role.
Marvel’s casting for the legendary mutant remains one of the entertainment industry’s biggest open questions. The studio has also reportedly been eyeing Sadie Sink for Jean Grey, Samara Weaving for Emma Frost, and Kit Connor for Cyclops, though several major roles remain in flux.
Director Jake Schreier, fresh off Thunderbolts, will helm the reboot, which aims to launch a new generation of X-Men into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
While Pelphrey missed out on Xavier’s wheelchair this time around, his near-casting proves just how much his profile has elevated a testament to the distance he’s traveled from supporting roles to contending for Hollywood’s biggest franchises.
